Prostate Cancer and its Causes

Prostate is the exocrine gland in Male reproductive system and exists in front of the rectum and directly under the bladder, Abnormal growth of cancerous cells in prostate is called prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer usually grows very slow.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer and the 6th leading cause of cancer death among men worldwide. In India prevalence of prostate cancer was considered to be far lower as compared to other countries but with changing life styles more cases of prostate cancer are been reported.  Among men of all races and Hispanic origin population's Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death. However mortality rate with prostate cancer is not high, hence it widely affects the men it's not the cause of death. If diagnosed early it can be cured successfully. A chance of detecting prostate cancer at early stage is possible only through regular routine check-up and blood tests.
Prostate cancer grows with age and usually occurs at the age of 55 or older. About 1 in 7 men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer is the second leading cause of death in men.
Eating right food, regular exercise, keeping to a healthy weight and not smoking can improve men's chances of developing prostate cancer.
Causes of Prostate Cancer are:
  1. History: The risk of prostate Cancer increases twice if ones Brother or Father has/had.
  2. Genetics:  Faulty/ Changes in BRCA1 and BRCA2 inherited genes have increased the risk of prostate cancer
  1. Diet: Increased consumption of red meat or high-fat dairy products have an increased risk for developing the cancer
  2. Obesity: Obesity increase the chances of Prostate cancer and mortality
  3. Inflammation of the prostate: Untreated Prostate inflammation can lead to prostate cancer
  4. Sexually transmitted infections: Men who have/had Gonorrhoea have higher chances of developing prostate cancer.
Signs and Symptoms:
In the initial stages of prostate cancer there are usually no symptoms. Prostate Cancer at this stage can only be detected after a routine check-up or Blood test.
Usually Symptoms at later stages are:
  • Frequent Urination during day or night
  • Hard to Urinate
  • Cannot wait to urinate (loss of control
  • Blood in Urine
  • Pain or burning sensation while urinating
  • Inability or finds difficult in emptying the bladder
  • Painful Ejaculation
  • Pain in hips, pelvis or ribs
  • Weakness in legs
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
